Potential runway extension update

Plans for any runway extension are on pause for the moment as we work on getting consent to rebuild our southern seawall. This is essential work to protect the runway and vital infrastructure.

However, we still see the benefits of increasing Wellington’s connectivity via major hub airports in Asia and America and will review operating requirements prior to the new seawall construction. Aircraft and runway technology is improving all the time, so in future we expect to be able to have long haul flights without needing as large an extension, if at all.
